For my Assignment I was given task to develop a 3D
environment of my own choice. I have chosen to create my environment with a
Space Station theme and have spent a lot of time on the production process. This
theme was inspired by a game called Alien Isolation and a film called Gravity.
The target audience was set for 16+, so to make it suitable I made sure to make
it look dark and scary but at the same time light enough to see what’s going on
so I played around with some textures and made some parts glass to make it look
really good and appealing for the eye.
Feedback
For the majority of my feedback I had people watch my animation which takes you through my map to comment on my video on you tube which is where I uploaded it the majority of my recordings or animations from other tasks. I asked people to comment on the textures and models so I had something to talk about in my Evaluation. The overall impression I had got from people who commented was good but there is still room for improvement which is fair so I would agree with them but the majority of the feedback was good and I am happy with the results of the feedback.
One of the most commented on things was the camera speed for my animation most people said it was to fast and they would like to see it slowed down so that they can see the environment better I think this is a fair comment and I will consider slowing down the video.
Environment detail
Overall, a lot of people liked my 3D Environment. Most of
them like how I had merged various textures to give my environment a dark and
squashed feel to although a few people said it was larger in some points I
still think it is a squashed space environment in some points of the environment.
Some people also said that my Environment could have been larger and I agree
with them but as I have already said I didn't have the time to make it any
bigger but what I have you can clearly see what skills I have used to create
it.
A large Amount of people who watched my animation said that detail I have put into certain Models. Most people seemed to point out were the
Control panel, Capsules, and the computers. There was quite a recurring problem
here though with the floor texture in the space station on the control room
floor as many people pointed out that the Control room was "Missing a
certain texture". This was Unknown to me but my time management had been
made to be very sloppy and I could get the time to fix it.
After assembling my environment I think it looks really good and I really like the way it has turned out but I do think it could be better if I had given myself more time to create more Models but instead I spent to much time on each individual model so I think I could have done better if I had stuck to my time keeping properly instead of spending too long on individual models but other than that I think each model is as good as I could make them and I think they suit the space station environment I created for my project.
Strengths and weakness
During this project I had a number of weaknesses one of them was modeler the reason for this was because it had been a while since I had last used Modeler so when I was getting back into using it I had forgotten most things about how to use Modeler so it was like using it for the first time but after a while I quickly learnt how to use it again so it isn't a problem anymore but at first I did struggle to get my bearings so I had to learn quickly in order to get the project done. Another weakness I had was using the program Layout which is part of Modeler the reason for this was that I haven had much experience in using this but other than that I worked out how to use the program and I am confident using it in the future so even though it was a weakness at first I would say it was becoming one of my strengths and I would enjoy using it again to create another animation because the result of the one I created turned out really well.
Evaluation
This assignment had me use a large range of skills in order
to produce the final product. I researched 3D Environments 3D models of space
stations and objects inside them I used this research as a structure for my Environment
in which I built a medium size space station with my own design. From this I
have learnt and adapted a variety of skills which could then help me in jobs or
other projects in the future. A few skills I learnt that I had no idea about
before the project was UV mapping, texturing, and layout. Theses where all
complicated in the past to me but after using them I was surprised how easy they
were to use.
Throughout this task I have used many different methods and
techniques in order to do this and I think my final product looks really good
and I am surprised with the end result. I also believe that I have met the
terms of the brief and completed what it has asked from me because I have
created a dark and squashed Environment, age 16+ scary space station 3D
environment that people online are able to see in my animation of the environment.
I also tried to use time management skill but most the time I struggled to keep
up with some of the things I was doing. I did try to set a certain time for
each model but that went out of the window and if I’m honest I was lucky to
reach my deadline. An example of this would be my space station I did intend on
making it huge and detailed but I didn't keep a good time management and I had
to settle with a medium size space station which is still really good.
Research – During my research I made sure to gather a number
of objects that would inspire me when making my own such as space station parts.
One important thing I learnt was developing my environment with textures. I
learnt that a more effective environments would use and merge multiple
textures. The rest of my research was just the overall look of a space station and
the interior because I intended to make it as accurate as I could do.
Planning - I was not able to create the entire blueprints
that I planned from the start but I was able to construct a Space station ring
and control room. This meant that I had planned to do too much and would be
very hard to do in the length of time available, although the planning for the
objects and Space station went quite well and was carried out effectively later
on in development.
Production – I did
spend lots of time thinking and developing my models. I do believe a large amount
of them have been developed as detailed as possible, also a favorite of mine
would be the capsule and the computer I created. For my game world, and my
production went really well too. It mostly went good but at some points slow
but it did go to plan apart from I had to make a few additional adjustments
last minutes. During this process, I was able to develop a good amount of objects
that I am happy with, as well as a detailed 3D Environments along with an
animation to show it off. This was my favorite area because I had spent a lot
of time making sure models and the environment looked good enough and was at a
good standard.
Overall, I really liked how my 3D Environment has turned
out. The design I produced for the medium size space station went according to
plan with a few minor changes which I thought would make it look better. The
space station does looks better than how I imagined it to and I was even able
to make a 3D animation of it. I also think it is suitable for its intended
audience. There is lots of dark and squashed areas, so this fits in with the 16+
audience I was aiming it at. I am extremely happy with my end result and happy
that I used a range techniques to compete this project. The majority of my textures
work and fit in with my 3d Environment and the theme. The improvements are
mainly simple things that are easily fixable which is really good for me and I
believe the end product looks really good at its final stage.
