Task 7 - Feedback And Evaluation

Task description
For my Assignment I was given task to develop a 3D environment of my own choice. I have chosen to create my environment with a Space Station theme and have spent a lot of time on the production process. This theme was inspired by a game called Alien Isolation and a film called Gravity. The target audience was set for 16+, so to make it suitable I made sure to make it look dark and scary but at the same time light enough to see what’s going on so I played around with some textures and made some parts glass to make it look really good and appealing for the eye.

Feedback
For the majority of my feedback I had people watch my animation which takes you through my map to comment on my video on you tube which is where I uploaded it the majority of my recordings or animations from other tasks. I asked people to comment on the textures and models so I had something to talk about in my Evaluation. The overall impression I had got from people who commented was good but there is still room for improvement which is fair so I would agree with them but the majority of the feedback was good and I am happy with the results of the feedback.

One of the most commented on things was the camera speed for my animation most people said it was to fast and they would like to see it slowed down so that they can see the environment better I think this is a fair comment and I will consider slowing down the video.

Environment detail
Overall, a lot of people liked my 3D Environment. Most of them like how I had merged various textures to give my environment a dark and squashed feel to although a few people said it was larger in some points I still think it is a squashed space environment in some points of the environment. Some people also said that my Environment could have been larger and I agree with them but as I have already said I didn't have the time to make it any bigger but what I have you can clearly see what skills I have used to create it.

Model detail
A large Amount of people who watched my animation said that detail I have put into certain Models. Most people seemed to point out were the Control panel, Capsules, and the computers. There was quite a recurring problem here though with the floor texture in the space station on the control room floor as many people pointed out that the Control room was "Missing a certain texture". This was Unknown to me but my time management had been made to be very sloppy and I could get the time to fix it.

Overall look of the Environment
After assembling my environment I think it looks really good and I really like the way it has turned out but I do think it could be better if I had given myself more time to create more Models but instead I spent to much time on each individual model so I think I could have done better if I had stuck to my time keeping properly instead of spending too long on individual models but other than that I think each model is as good as I could make them and I think they suit the space station environment I created for my project.

Strengths and weakness
During this project I had a number of weaknesses one of them was modeler the reason for this was because it had been a while since I had last used Modeler so when I was getting back into using it I had forgotten most things about how to use Modeler so it was like using it for the first time but after a while I quickly learnt how to use it again so it isn't a problem anymore but at first I did struggle to get my bearings so I had to learn quickly in order to get the project done. Another weakness I had was using the program Layout which is part of Modeler the reason for this was that I haven had much experience in using this but other than that I worked out how to use the program and I am confident using it in the future so even though it was a weakness at first I would say it was becoming one of my strengths and I would enjoy using it again to create another animation because the result of the one I created turned out really well.

Evaluation
This assignment had me use a large range of skills in order to produce the final product. I researched 3D Environments 3D models of space stations and objects inside them I used this research as a structure for my Environment in which I built a medium size space station with my own design. From this I have learnt and adapted a variety of skills which could then help me in jobs or other projects in the future. A few skills I learnt that I had no idea about before the project was UV mapping, texturing, and layout. Theses where all complicated in the past to me but after using them I was surprised how easy they were to use.

Throughout this task I have used many different methods and techniques in order to do this and I think my final product looks really good and I am surprised with the end result. I also believe that I have met the terms of the brief and completed what it has asked from me because I have created a dark and squashed Environment, age 16+ scary space station 3D environment that people online are able to see in my animation of the environment. I also tried to use time management skill but most the time I struggled to keep up with some of the things I was doing. I did try to set a certain time for each model but that went out of the window and if I’m honest I was lucky to reach my deadline. An example of this would be my space station I did intend on making it huge and detailed but I didn't keep a good time management and I had to settle with a medium size space station which is still really good.

Research – During my research I made sure to gather a number of objects that would inspire me when making my own such as space station parts. One important thing I learnt was developing my environment with textures. I learnt that a more effective environments would use and merge multiple textures. The rest of my research was just the overall look of a space station and the interior because I intended to make it as accurate as I could do.

Planning - I was not able to create the entire blueprints that I planned from the start but I was able to construct a Space station ring and control room. This meant that I had planned to do too much and would be very hard to do in the length of time available, although the planning for the objects and Space station went quite well and was carried out effectively later on in development.

Production – I did spend lots of time thinking and developing my models. I do believe a large amount of them have been developed as detailed as possible, also a favorite of mine would be the capsule and the computer I created. For my game world, and my production went really well too. It mostly went good but at some points slow but it did go to plan apart from I had to make a few additional adjustments last minutes. During this process, I was able to develop a good amount of objects that I am happy with, as well as a detailed 3D Environments along with an animation to show it off. This was my favorite area because I had spent a lot of time making sure models and the environment looked good enough and was at a good standard.

Overall, I really liked how my 3D Environment has turned out. The design I produced for the medium size space station went according to plan with a few minor changes which I thought would make it look better. The space station does looks better than how I imagined it to and I was even able to make a 3D animation of it. I also think it is suitable for its intended audience. There is lots of dark and squashed areas, so this fits in with the 16+ audience I was aiming it at. I am extremely happy with my end result and happy that I used a range techniques to compete this project. The majority of my textures work and fit in with my 3d Environment and the theme. The improvements are mainly simple things that are easily fixable which is really good for me and I believe the end product looks really good at its final stage.

Task 6 - Excitable prototype

My 3D Environment

Task 5 - Layout Animation and Environment build

Placing objects into Environment

Here you can see that I have placed the whole space station object into my Environment this will be used to place the rest of my objects in and create the whole space station itself and I have made sure that the lighting inside it is bright enough to see the objects I will be placing inside it.

Here you can see one of many of my med packs I have placed around my space station this was to give it more detail and to make my station look better due to the amount of detail inside it.

In this image you can see that I have placed a row of capsules into the station this is to make it look futuristic and for beds in the station I found this to look really good when I placed a few of theses together because it looks bare with just one individual one on its own.

This image shows you my control panel. I have placed two of theses in the control room of my station to make it look good and because I find them to look really nice in the places I have put them.

Here you can see one of my favorite parts of my station this is the computers. I have placed a few of these around the station because it makes it look better and because it fits into the environment I have created.

Here you can see the top view of my space station the top of it is made of glass to let light into the Environment and to make it look even better because you can see out of the top of the station.

Task 4 - Exported models and surfaces/UV maps

Space Station control room Air lock doors Texture and UV Map

Here you can see that I have selected the eight images I will be using to texture and UV map.

Here you can see that I have selected the shapes I will be texturing first I selected theses images then I went on to pressing Q to surface the image this allowed me to then use the image to texture it how I wanted to by surfacing the areas I wanted to texture different to other areas.

Then you can see that I Have got the UV map of  of the Air lock doors I did this by going to maps then I went down and clicked on new UV map this then create the image above

After That I went onto using the snipping tool to get the part of the UV map I wanted to use to then edit it in Photoshop later on.

Here you can see the saved image of the UV map I have placed it into Photoshop to texture it so I began with looking for a suitable Image I would then use to texture the UV map of my model.

As you can see here I have began to texture the UV map of my model I have chosen to use an air lock door image so I began with placing each image onto each circle individually to get the best possible end result for my model after this I saved this image as a Jpeg to ten put into modeler.

After texturing the UV map in modeler I began with going to surface edition then I selected the surface I wanted to edit then I placed the The image I saved as a Jpeg into the model an after that the model is ready to go because i have finished UV mapping and texturing it.

Task 3 - Environment model

Corridors

8.01.2015 - 15.01.2015

First I started with the corridors on either side of my space station I started with a disc shape then enlarged it and then I cut out a box shape in the middle of it to create space inside the ship and to enable me to furnish it.

Secondly I cut out the side of a piece of my corridor at the side to make it possible to join up each part of my station.

Here I created a joint for the corridors on my space station I wanted to make my Station round at the corridors bout I found it easier to make it more square because later on i will be adding a ring around my station.

In this image you can see where each part of my station will look like when it is joined together there will be one or two of these on my station.

In this image you can see that i have made a Corridor going upwards this was to show there is going to be multiple levels to my station for now there will be three.

Here you can see that I have textured my station this was just to get a good overview of what the station will look like with my custom texture on it in my opinion I think it looks really good and I hope to add different textures around the station.

This was the UV map I used to put a texture on my space station I only placed a texture on this part of the ship to get an overview of what its looks like and to see if the modeler is clean.

Space Station Ring

22.01.2015 - 30.01.2015

Here you can see the first shape I created to make my ring I made this with a ten degree angle on either side to get a perfect circle shape when I eventually started to create the circle shape this was the first piece in my puzzle.

Here you can see mu angled part of my circle in which I started off with to create my ring for my space station I used this one piece to create the whole ring.

In this image you can see that I have put a straight long tunnel which will meat up with the centre tower of my space station where everything what I maid will be put in,

Here you can see the full ring at the moment it looks like the inside of a sniper scope but eventually it will look like part of a space station.

In this image you can see that i have hollowed out the ring to make it accessible for the player to access the inertia of the space station.

Space Station Control panel

05.02.2015 - 06.02.2015

In theses images you can see that I have devolved the first part of my computer this was the upper part of it with the screens and keyboards.

Here you can see that I have surfaced the computers after I have finished building them and added chairs I surfaced them to mark out the areas in which I will texture different compared to other areas of the model.

Space Station Capsule

Space Station med pack

Here you can see that I have created a medical box and I have surfaced it and textured it as well to make it look better visually and to make it fit into my environment in which I have created.

Space Station power box

Here you can see my power box this is just some more detail for my space station and I thought it would fit in well and make my environment look better which I am intending on doing.

Space Station Control room

Here you can see that I have modeled a control Room I have modeled it and then colored areas in which I will texture differently but overall this model looks really good and I am happy with how it has turned out.

Space Station toilet

Here you can see my toilet this toilet was simple to design I don't think I will end up texturing it because it is already the same color of a standard toilet I am happy with the result of this and I think it would look good in my space station.

Task 2 - Design pack and legal and ethical check

Design Pack

Task 1 - Setting research
